 What You Need to Know About ANSI/IWCA 1-14.1

IWCA I-14.1, Window Cleaning Safety, was formerly approved on October 25, 2001;

Building owners are required to provide a safe building in which to work at;

OSHA mandates that all buildings three stories and higher, where work is performed employing suspended equipment, require safety roof anchors to protect workers in the event of a fall

For each drop, two anchors are required - one for the primary line and the other a lifeline

Under the new standard, existing buildings without the means and methods to safely clean windows must be retrofitted with roof anchors. For new construction, anchor point planning is easily done at the design stage

Anchors are to be placed a minimum of six (6) feet from the roof edge, unless fall protection is provided to access these anchors on the parapet wall exceeds 42 inches
Provide a PLAN OF SERVICE (P.O.S.), a written plan developed by the window cleaning contractor, consultant or engineer. This document provides specific information as it relates to window cleaning drops, such as hazardous areas, tiebacks for each drop, safety features and areas requiring public protection below
Depending on the state, there are certain regulations pertaining to rope descent systems (R.D.S.) such as the Bosun's chair, a common method used by high-rise window cleaners. I-14.1, allows descents of up to 300 feet, although there are states which regulated this to 130 feet (California) or prohibit this technique altogether (New York)
